The Story

Food is a universal uniter.

Every culture, every group, every body, shares a commonality in food. And while the food that exists across the world is as diverse as the people who exist alongside it, one sure fire way to get to know another culture is through gastronomy. And NYUAD is no exception.

While we may always originally connect with our food from home, as we meet other people from different cultures, we begin to expand on the food we cook and consume. As you make friends with people with different tastes than you, you begin to incorporate their tastes into your own. Your cooking will evolve with your friendships and connections with others. And in an environment as diverse as NYUAD, these evolutions will span across the world.

You may start by cooking food from home, then move on to perfecting your best friend's favorite dish, then onto making something that will bring joy to your partner. Food connects so many senses, smell, sight, hearing, taste, and this multitude of senses is tied closely to emotion as well. Food is tied into memory, family, and identity.

And as we grow within this university, so does our culinary repertoire. And this journey is documented through the video series you have just interacted with. You start with home food, then you move onto friends, then onto a lover. No matter how your life changes, and no matter who enters your life, food is constant. And the little idiosyncrasies that go into its preparation can tell a much greater story. So allow yourself to be pulled into a new story, one that goes hand in hand with the story of every NYUAD student. As your cooking evolves, so do you.
